October 28, 2009 ~Costumes for Kids Festival~
During the month of October Seaside Smiles will be collecting 'gently used' costumes from our families and the community to help benefit children in need of a costume this Halloween. The recipiants of the donations will be the children of the Hibiscus Children's Center, the Samaritan Shelter, and Operation Hope.
Costumes can be dropped off at our office or Christi’s Family Fitness any day up till and including Wednesday, October 28. At that time you will receive a ticket for admission for your family to attend our inaugural ‘Costumes for Kids Festival’ at our office on Wednesday, October 28 from 5-7 PM. The kids are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes and come for and evening of fun with Live Music, Cupcake Walks, Games, Face Painting, Pumpkin Decorating, Hayrides, Popcorn, Snowcones, and more! Dr. Mindy and the staff will all have their Toy Story costumes on so the kids can get a good laugh!!
This is going to be a lot of fun but we’ll need your help to make it a success! Don’t hesitate to call our office at 772-562-6880 for more information or just e-mail us at info@seasidesmiles.com. Our Seaside Smiles family is a generous one and helping encourage our kids to extend a helping hand out to those in need is always a valuable lesson to be reminded of.

February 14, 2009 ~Walk For the One You Love~
On June, 13 of 2008 Shannon Kelly rose up as an angel to look over and guide her family and all of us. Her mother Sandie Kelly regrouped after losing her daughter to Juvenile Diabetes last year and organized the Walk For the One You Love to  help raise awareness for Juvenile Diabetes and focus her energy toward preventing other parents from having to go through what she has been through. Dr. Marc McCain spoke to parents about how JD affects young people and some things to watch for that may be indicators including: extreme thirst; frequent urination; drowsiness or lethargy; sugar in urine among others. To learn more about Juvenile Diabetes ask your child's pediatrician at your next well child visit or go online to www.jdrf.org. Seaside Smiles was proud to be a sponsor and participant in this wonderful event. Dr. Mindy, Andy, and Jackson as well as Jennifer and her son Raymond all participated in the walk and the event. The children had fun with a bouncehouse and a demonstration by City Fitness. Shannon's sister, Melissa, is a patient of ours here at Seaside Smiles and we are honored to have her and this wonderful family coming to our office. Congratulations Sandie and Terry on a successful event and we look forward to next year!

December 13, 2008 ~Leukemia & Lymphoma Rudolph Run~
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training of Vero Beach hosted their 1st Annual Run/Walk 5K today on a very frigid December morning! Dr. Mindy, Mr. Andy, Ms. Jennifer (and her son Raymond), all participated by either running or  walking to support this worthy cause. The LLS is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. Leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 52, 910 people in the United States this year. Every ten minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from Leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. Seaside Smiles is very proud to be a supporter of such a worthy endeavor and a lot of fun was had by all. Mr. Andy also vows for next year not to get passed at the very end by one of our own patients (good job Olcott)!!!

September 18, 2008 ~Chamber of Commerce Awards Ceremony~
The Indian River Chamber of Commerce held its 2008 Industry Appreciation Awards Luncheon today to recognize businesses throughout the community that  have made significant contributions toward making Indian River County a better place to live and work. Businesses were judged on several factors including: Impact on Immediate Area, Landscaping, Building's Unique Features, and being User Friendly. We are very honored and proud to announce Seaside Smiles has won the Industry Appreciation Award for "New Small Commercial building." Many people worked very hard to organize and execute this project and we are extremely grateful for all their hard work and dedication. Our contractor, Charlie Jones, with Barkett and Kenney Contruction, Inc., should also be very proud as this award is a direct reflection on his careful attention to detail and quality craftsmanship. We are proud of everything we have to offer the community and are very pleased to have chosen such a wonderful place to live!

September 17, 2008 ~Mrs. Sindy gets her haircut!~
Sindy Smith, our head dental assistant, took the plunge and finally got her  haircut! Her hair has been down past her waist for several years and she recently made the decision she would cut it shorter and donate the hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Sindy was able to donate over 12 inches of hair! Sindy has donated hair to Locks of Love previously and considers this to be a very worthy cause. Way to go Sindy; by the way, your hair looks great!!

June 5, 2008 ~Williams Elementary School Awards Ceremony~
Mr. Andy traveled up to Gainesville to attend the awards ceremony for the third and fourth grade students at Williams Elementary School, where he used to work as a third grade teacher in the gifted magnet program. The year he left Mr. Andy gave out an award called The Tyler Staab Award that is a perpetual award given to a third grade student who demonstrates leadership, compassion, and works hard in school. The winner of the award receives a trophy, has his/her name engraved on a plaque kept at the school, and a donation is made to the Tyler's Hope for a Dystonia Cure foundation.
Tyler Staab was a student in Mr. Andy's class during the last year he taught at Williams Elementary. At the age of 7, Tyler was diagnosed with DYT-1 Dystonia, a movement disorder where the brain sends wayward signals to muscles, causing them to contract involuntarily in often painful positions. Tyler has undergone two 8-hour surgeries called Deep Brain Stimulation to attempt to allieviate the symptoms of dystonia and give him a chance at a sense of normalcy. Despite Tyler's stuggles with the disorder, he maintains a sense of humor, gets all A's in school, and is a friend to so many of his peers.

Tyler's Parents, Rick and Michelle Staab, have set up a foundation to raise awareness for Dystonia and to help reach the ultimate goal of establishing a research institute for Movement Disorders at the University of Florida, where doctors will work toward finding a cure for disorders such as Dystonia and Parkinson's Disease. January 26, 2008 ~Huntington Learning Center Grand Opening~
Dr. Mindy, Mr. Andy, and Ms. Stephanie set up a table at the grand opening of the Huntington Learning Center on Saturday and brought Nemo and Sally the Starfish with them to talk to the kids about the importance of brushing and flossing! In addition, we raffled off an Ipod shuffle and are pleased to announce the winner of the drawing, Sydney Northup, age 7. She was very appreciative and excited about her new MP3 player and about the new office as she and her mom came to pick up her i-pod and get her picture taken. Congratulations Sydney! Enjoy your new i-pod!
The event featured animals from the Busch Gardens Wildlife Sanctuary, music and Hannah Montana raffle tickets from 93.7 FM, face painting, McGruff, the crimedog, fingerprinting from the police department, and a Karate demonstration. It turned out to be a beautiful day and the kids had a great time. Thank you very much to the Huntington Learning Center for inviting us to be a part of such a fun event!
